Chondroitin sulfate is a sulfated glycosaminoglycan naturally present in cartilage extracellular matrix. It is marketed as a nutritional joint supplement, commonly combined with glucosamine, for animals with osteoarthritis. Veterinary use is primarily supportive, and clinical outcomes depend on the formulation, concurrent ingredients and the population studied.

Mechanism of Action
Cartilage chondroitin sulfate binds water and contributes to the resilience and compressive properties of the extracellular matrix. Proposed effects of supplementation include provision of substrates for matrix synthesis and modulation of enzymes and inflammatory processes involved in cartilage degradation. Much of this rationale comes from experimental work; absorption of intact oral chondroitin and the contribution of these mechanisms to clinical benefit remain uncertain.
Dose Rates
Dogs
| Use / stage | Dose | Route | Schedule | Instructions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Osteoarthritis support | Reference only | PO | Product-specific Cosequin RS 1–2 capsules daily, or DS 2–4 capsules in large dogs. Exact current all-active strengths are not established for these products. | |
| Chronic pain adjunct | 13–15 mg/kg | PO | Every 24 h | CHONDROITIN component mass in a glucosamine/chondroitin product, not combined ingredient total. |
| Chronic pain adjunct | 13–15 mg/kg | PO | Every 24–48 h | Chondroitin component basis; interval individualized to response. |
| Cancer-pain adjunct — Initial | 15–30 mg/kg | PO | Every 24 h | Up to 42 days; Chondroitin component basis for 4–6 weeks, then halve the selected dose; this is an adjunct, not sufficient cancer analgesia alone. |
| Cancer-pain supplement maintenance | Reference only | PO | After the initial 4–6 weeks, use half the individually selected initial chondroitin-component dose. Do not automatically substitute a midpoint. |
Cats
| Use / stage | Dose | Route | Schedule | Instructions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Osteoarthritis support | Reference only | PO | One regular-strength Cosequin capsule daily; do not convert to another product without its exact active composition. | |
| Chronic pain adjunct | 15–20 mg/kg | PO | Every 24–48 h | Chondroitin component basis in a combination supplement. |
Horses
| Use / stage | Dose | Route | Schedule | Instructions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Osteoarthritis support | Reference only | PO | Combination glucosamine/chondroitin schedules are detailed under Monitoring and Administration; these must not be reduced to isolated chondroitin dosing. |
Indications
- Adjunctive nutritional support for dogs with osteoarthritis, aimed at improving comfort and mobility; clinical benefits are inconsistent across studies and products.
- Adjunctive joint support for horses with degenerative joint disease or associated lameness, usually in combination supplements; evidence of clinical benefit is limited.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to a product component.
Interactions
- High doses may increase effects of warfarin, heparin or other anticoagulants.
- Glucosamine-containing combinations may oppose doxorubicin or etoposide effects in experimental systems; clinical significance remains uncertain.
Adverse effects
- Hypersensitivity is possible
- Flatulence or soft stools
- Chronic excessive use of manganese-containing products can cause manganese toxicity
Preparations
| Preparation | Form | Strength | Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cosequin for Cats maximum-strength sprinkle capsule Hydrous sodium chondroitin sulfate strength, with 10% moisture noted by the product. Manufacturer directions: one capsule daily at 10 lb or below, two above 10 lb for 4–6 weeks, then one every other day or one daily respectively. No anhydrous chondroitin equivalence is inferred. | Capsule | sodium chondroitin sulfate 100 mg / capsule + glucosamine hydrochloride 125 mg / capsule + manganese 1 mg / capsule | PO |
Monitoring and Administration
Clinical dose recommendations are largely empirical and product-specific.
The described older Cosequin regular-strength formulation contains 250 mg glucosamine plus 200 mg chondroitin/mixed glycosaminoglycans with manganese compounds; double-strength products differ. Their composition cannot be reduced to a verified single-component strength from the passage.
Dogs: 1–2 regular-strength capsules daily, or 2–4 double-strength capsules for large dogs. Cats: one regular-strength capsule daily. These product-based amounts must not be transferred to a different formulation.
Horses: glucosamine 12 mg/kg plus chondroitin 3.8 mg/kg orally twice daily for 4 weeks, then glucosamine 4 mg/kg plus chondroitin 1.3 mg/kg thereafter; the maintenance interval is not assigned. Another initial daily combination is glucosamine 22 mg/kg plus chondroitin 8.8 mg/kg. Retain the combination context.
Assess response after 2–6 weeks. Evidence for feline lower-urinary-tract benefit is inconsistent and does not establish reliable efficacy.
The older small-dog regular-strength schedule starts below 10 lb at half to one capsule daily, or 10–24 lb at two daily, then reduces after 4–6 weeks. Larger-dog double-strength schedules use two capsules at 25–49 lb, three at 50–100 lb and four above 100 lb. Do not transfer these counts to a current different-strength product.
For the historical equine concentrated powder, initial twice-daily scoop counts are 2 below 600 lb, 3 at 600–1200 lb and 4 above 1200 lb for 2–4 weeks. Only after response, reduce by one scoop per week toward maintenance; scoop weight and current ingredient strengths must match. A separate navicular study used 16.5 g twice daily.
