Sarolaner is an isoxazoline ectoparasiticide used for flea and tick control in dogs. It also has clinical activity against selected mites, including Demodex and Sarcoptes species. Combination products pair it with other antiparasitics for a broader spectrum; those companion ingredients provide the additional heartworm or intestinal-worm activity.
Group
Isoxazoline ectoparasiticide
Mechanism of Action
Sarolaner inhibits arthropod ligand-gated chloride channels, particularly GABA-gated and glutamate-gated channels. Reduced inhibitory signaling produces uncontrolled neural excitation, paralysis and parasite death. Systemic exposure allows susceptible blood-feeding parasites to encounter active drug during feeding. Formulation and exposure determine the duration of activity against the targeted ectoparasites.
