Buparvaquone is a hydroxynaphthoquinone antiprotozoal used principally for bovine theileriosis. It has activity against susceptible schizont and erythrocytic piroplasm stages, supporting treatment of clinical infection. Its principal established applications involve tropical theileriosis and East Coast fever, with response influenced by the Theileria species and parasite susceptibility.
Group
Hydroxynaphthoquinone antiprotozoal
Mechanism of Action
Buparvaquone interferes with parasite mitochondrial electron transport, with cytochrome-b-associated pathways implicated in activity and resistance. Disruption of respiratory-chain function impairs mitochondrial metabolism and parasite survival, reducing susceptible schizont and piroplasm populations. Additional parasite targets have been investigated, so the complete contribution of individual molecular pathways remains incompletely defined.
Dose Rates

| Use / stage | Dose | Route | Schedule | Instructions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Theileriosis | 2.5 mg/kg | IM | Once | In severe cases one further treatment at the same dose may be given after 48-72 hours; maximum 10 mL per site. |
Buffaloes
| Use / stage | Dose | Route | Schedule | Instructions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Theileriosis | 2.5 mg/kg | IM | Once | In severe cases one further treatment at the same dose may be given after 48-72 hours; maximum 10 mL per site. |
Indications
- Treatment of bovine tropical theileriosis caused by susceptible Theileria annulata.
- Treatment of East Coast fever and related T. parva-associated theilerioses in cattle.
Contraindications
- Do not administer oily IM preparations IV or SC.
Interactions
- Delay vaccination until recovery from theileriosis-associated immunosuppression.
Adverse effects
- Local injection-site swelling may occur.
Toxicity
No specific antidote is established; manage adverse reactions supportively.

Monitoring and Administration
Give deeply into neck muscle, using no more than 10 mL per site for the cited oily formulation.
Monitor fever, anaemia, respiratory compromise and clinical response. Severe cases may need transfusion or other supportive care.
