Simethicone (Simeticone)

Antifoaming agent

Calculate dose
Simethicone (Simeticone)

Simethicone, also spelled simeticone, is a locally acting antifoaming agent composed of a silicone polymer with finely divided silica. Veterinary applications involve foam-associated gastrointestinal gas, including selected frothy-bloat products. It is minimally absorbed, so its clinical action is primarily physical within the gastrointestinal contents.

Antifoaming agent

Mechanism of Action

Simethicone destabilizes gas–liquid interfaces and reduces surface tension within foam. Small gas bubbles coalesce into larger pockets that can be released or expelled more readily. Collapse of stable foam can reduce foam-associated distension and improve gas evacuation. The effect concerns the physical form of luminal gas rather than inhibition of microbial gas production.

Toxicity

Systemic toxicity is unlikely because absorption is low; investigate the cause of persistent distension.

Monitoring and Administration

Distinguish frothy bloat from free-gas obstruction and GDV. Severe respiratory compromise needs immediate decompression and cause-directed treatment.

Use the exact anti-bloat product and its full ingredient list; administration by stomach tube requires confirmation of tube placement.

Veterinary use
