Progesterone

Progestogen hormone

Progesterone

Progesterone is the natural luteal steroid hormone essential to regulation of the estrous cycle and support of pregnancy. Veterinary preparations provide controlled progestational exposure in reproductive-management protocols. A principal application is synchronization of estrus or ovulation in cattle, including selected noncycling animals, using an appropriate sustained-release product.

Group

Progestogen hormone

Mechanism of Action

Progesterone activates intracellular progesterone receptors and produces luteal-phase feedback on hypothalamic and pituitary signaling. Suppression of the preovulatory gonadotropin surge temporarily prevents ovulation during exposure. Withdrawal produces a fall in progesterone, allowing coordinated follicular maturation and estrus when the animal and accompanying protocol are responsive. Receptor effects also support progesterone-dependent reproductive tissues.

Toxicity

Remove a retained or incorrectly used device and reassess clinically; absorbed exposure cannot be calculated from the total device content.

Monitoring and Administration

For Eazi-Breed CIDR cattle insert, use one intravaginal device in the complete selected synchronization protocol; total progesterone content is 1.38 g, not an injected or daily systemic dose.

Use gloves and an appropriate applicator; clean and disinfect equipment between animals. Leave the removal tail accessible and remove at the specified time.

Single-use inserts reduce transmission risk; do not infer reuse or substitute sheep and cattle device sizes.

Oestrous-cycle synchronization: Intravaginal device, not external topical application: one cattle CIDR containing 1.38 g progesterone. A commonly labelled course is seven days, with accompanying hormone timing defined by the selected protocol. No daily mass dose is inferred.

Veterinary use
