METRONIDAZOLE

Category

Anti protozoa, antibiotics, Nitroimidazole.

Action

Not known

(Bacteria under anaerobic condition, binds to DNA - Cause death)

-Interfere with pyruvate ferrodoxin reductase.

-Interfere with enzyme in the bacteria's electron transfer system.

Indication

Giardiasis, Intestinal problems,diarrhoea caused by protozoan,

Treatment of other parasites(Trichomones,Balantidium coli)

Treatment of anaerobic infection in horse 

Management of hepatic encephalopathy. 

Dose

Dog - 15 to 25 mg /kg for protozoan infection. (25mg/kg).

Cat -8  to 10 mg /kg.

Food animal prohibited. 

Equine- 20 to 25 mg /kg (BID).

Elephant- 15 mg /kg rectally.

 

Contraindications

1st trimester of pregnancy. 

Toxic to king cobra.

Toxic to small birds.

 

Adverse Effects

Vomiting, CNS Toxicity, Hepatotoxicity,hematuria.

Drug Interaction:

Phenobarbital, phenitoin may enhance, metabolism of metronidazole,

Cimetidine may decrease the metabolism of metronidazole.

Availability

inj meterkem (ALKEM) - 100 ml (5mg/ml) 

Inj metrogyl -100 ml(0.5 mg /ml).

Tablets:

Metrogyl- 200mg , 400mg 

Flagyl - 200 mg ,400 mg .

Susp:

metrogyl - 30 ml, 60 ml(40mcg /ml).

Flagyl - 60ml (40mcg per ml).
