Antibiotics (broad spectrum aminoglycoside) 

Action
  • Bactericidal
  • Bind with 30s (stronger binded) & 50s subunit of ribosomes    a)  Interferes with formation of initiation complex of protein synthesis          OR       Inhibits protein synthesis
Indication
  • Tropical preparations for skin, eyes, ears
  • Oral treatment: Treatment of enteric infection and to sterile colon prior to surgery
  • Orally/enema: To decrease NH3 producing bacteria in hepatic encephalopathy.
  • Antibacterial spectrum: G -ve aerobic, several G +ve     Resistance:  pseudomonas,  strepto Pyogenes
Dose
  • Ruminants: 3-6 mg/kg   6-12 hours interval   PO  88 mg/kg   8 hrs interval   SC
  • Horse: 2-6 mg /kg    6-12 hrs interval     PO                     4.4 mg/kg     8-12 hrs interval  IV
  • Small animals: 10-20 mg/kg      6-12 hrs interval      PO

 

Contraindications
  • Not safe in neonates
  • Chronic use leads to superinfection
  • Not safe in neuromuscular disorder, renal problems
  • Horse: antibiotics associated diarrhea (enterocolitis)
Adverse Effects
  • Parentral: nephrotoxic
  • Orally: ototoxicity, Nephrotoxicity, severe diarrhea, intestinal malabsorption
