Action
  • Alters transcription of DNA
  • Potent anti-inflammatory activity
  • Anti-inflammatory potency is 7.5 times greater than prednisolone
Indication
  • Ketosis
  • Inflammation of respiratory tract & urogenital tract
  • Local inflammatory conditions
  • Arthritis,
  • Surgical, anaphylactic, traumatic & haemorrhagic shock
  • Pregnancy toxemia
  • Aid in inducing parturition
  • Acute mastitis
  • Used to prevent and treat anaphylaxis associated with a transfusion or chemotherapeutic agents.
Dose

Ruminant:

  • 0.5-1mg/kg IV/IM
  • Parturition= 20-30mg
  • Anti inflammatory= 0.02-2mg/kg

Horse

  • Anti inflammatory= 0.01-0.2mg/kg
  • shock  = 0.5-2 mg

Cat = 0.125 - 0.5 mg IV / IM

Dog =  0.5-1 mg IV / IM 

Contraindications
  • Pregnant animal
  • Renal disease
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Systemic fungal infections
  • Animals with arrested tuberculosis
  • Peptic ulcer
  • Acute psychoses
  • Corneal ulcer
  • Cushingoid syndrome.
Adverse Effects
  • Cushingoid in nature with prolonged use
  • Impaired wound healing and delayed recovery from infections
  • The risk of developing hypokalaemia is increased if corticosteroids are administered concomitantly with amphotericin B or potassium-depleting diuretics (furosemide, thiazides).
